Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is it illegal to fly a pirate flag?
While you must have a flag identifying your home port on your boat's premium position, flying a pirate flag is not illegal. There are technically rules against it, but they have not been enforced in hundreds of years. For all intents and purposes, it is perfectly legal to fly a pirate flag on your boat, vessel, dock, house, or anywhere else you want to.
Why do people fly the pirate flag?
In times past, pirate flags were used to show intent and instill fear in other legal vessels. Red flags could show no quarter given, while black may mean mercy if the other vessel surrendered. They were a sign on independence and ferocity. Now days, pirate flags are flown for fun and a sense of adventure. They bring joy and happiness instead of pain and sorrow.
What are pirate flags made of?
Traditionally, pirates were not able to go to normal flag makers in port, so they had to make their own. The best material they had on hand usually was sail cloth. Our premium hand dyed flags are made of 100% fade resistant polyester.
How did pirates make their flags?
The pirates would dye the flag black using tar or red using clay. Once the field of the flag was dyed, they would use whatever color dye(s) they had on hand to create their design. We use a dye sublimation process that holds the color well with incredible detail.
What does a pirate flag symbolize?
The pirate flag symbolized the crew who sailed under it. When a new crew elected a captain and voted on the rules of the ship a flag was created in honor of that bond. The crew, and their captain, were free to choose what rules they wanted to live by and how they wanted to operate. If they didn’t want to give quarter a red flag was drafted. If they thought mercy and quarter were appropriate, they would create a black flag. Occasionally other colors were used to symbolize aspects of their crew that they wanted to highlight and celebrate.
Pirate Flags Meaning?
There aren't any real meanings left to pirate flags in the traditional sense. Today, pirate flags meaning have been relegated to nostalgia, and a sense of adventure. If you fly a pirate flag now, you are signaling to the world you are ready for fun and adventure.
Are there any real pirate flags?
There are no surviving pirate flags from the “Golden Age of Piracy.” Instead, we know what they looked like from eyewitness accounts of warships, merchant ships, pirates, and ports. There are several descriptions that can be found in different forms. The most common would be from texts, but there also exist woodcuts for making prints of what they may have looked like.
What is your return policy?
Because of the nature of custom printed products, we're able to offer returns and refunds for manufacturing defects only. If for whatever reason our flag arrives damaged or with printing artifacts contact us at support@flagmagic.com within the first 7 days of your flags arrival.
How long does shipping take?
All our flags are made to order – typically our shop is able to process custom prints within 5-7 business days with shipment taking an additional 3-5 business days once we're able to process your order. We do our best to get you your custom flag as fast as possible while ensuring we're able to keep up our quality standards!
How are your flags made?
We start with high quality sheets of raw polyester fabric then, through dye sublimation, we print your custom graphics at a very high resolution before allowing the dye to cure. After printing is finished, we cut and sew your flag, and finally finish by installing brass grommets on the header side of the flag.
What are your flags made of?
Our flags are made of high quality, durable polyester and come with corrosion resistant brass grommets for hanging – this optimal combination allows for use indoors or out. Additionally, our full size 3 foot by 5 foot flags come with a durable canvas header to reinforce our brass grommets' strength for outdoor use.
Can I use my custom flag outside?
Of course! We do recommend, however, that only our full (3' x 5') flag size double sided flags be used outdoors for their added robustness and durability to withstand various weather conditions.
